Hearing rumors the Drift exploit took longer to notice because everyone thought it was an April Fool’s prank. Extremely sophisticated play by the attacker.

Earlier today, a malicious actor gained unauthorized access to Drift Protocol through a novel attack involving durable nonces, resulting in a rapid takeover of Drift’s Security Council administrative powers. This was a highly sophisticated operation that appears to have involved multi-week preparation and staged execution, including the use of durable nonce accounts to pre-sign transactions that delayed execution.

🚨Just in: A @DriftProtocol-linked wallet saw roughly $280M in unusual outflows, accounting for nearly 50% of its TVL. The team confirmed the exploit was carried out using pre-signed durable nonce transactions alongside a targeted social engineering attack. #CoinPedia #CryptoNews #Blockchain #CryptoMarket

sucks for drift and the solonbros who got rekt hope they can track the hackers and have the funds returned in part or in full as someone who has been in war-rooms and has ptsd from such ordeals, i don’t think tribalistic attacks are appropriate or justified. people’s lives are literally at stake and grave dancing for lolz or spite is despicable

Drift is a brutal normie‑adoption story and a giant ad for risk. Who wants to be a part‑time risk manager just to park capital? DeFi’s now basically full‑time paranoia. 🫡 https://t.co/QT9A7IfJeg

Drift Protocol has issued an official statement, after $280 million disappeared from the system. . The cause is not a code bug, and there is no evidence of a seed phrase leak; instead it is a highly complex new attack method that was planned weeks in advance. . The attackers used a technique called durable nonces, which involves signing transactions in advance and executing them later, allowing them to insert themselves into Drift’s approval system unnoticed. . Timeline of events - March 23: The attacker began creating durable nonce accounts, some of which were actually linked to Drift’s multisig members. - March 27: Drift switched to a new multisig set as planned, unaware that the attacker had prepared a response. - March 30: The attacker created a new nonce account for the new multisig and regained approval rights of 2 out of 5. - April 1: Executed the pre‑signed transaction, seized admin rights within minutes, and withdrew all funds. . The affected funds cover all parts, including vault deposits for borrowing and deposits for trading. . Unaffected assets are SOL that was not deposited in Drift and the money in the Insurance Fund, which was withdrawn beforehand for safety. . Drift is now coordinating with security companies, exchanges, and law enforcement to trace the stolen money and will release a detailed post‑mortem report in a few days.

Drift Protocol was attacked, with losses exceeding $285 million. . On April 1, 2026, users began noticing a large sum being transferred from the Drift Vault to an unfamiliar wallet starting with "HkGz4K". . This wallet was created a week earlier, initially holding only 1 SOL and had received a $2.52 test deposit from the Drift Vault before the incident. . The first transfer was JLP tokens worth $155 million, totaling over 41 million tokens, followed by other assets being moved and later distributed to other wallets. . @DriftProtocol confirmed on X that it was indeed under attack, immediately halted deposits and withdrawals, and coordinated with multiple bridge and exchange security firms, emphasizing "This is not an April Fools joke". . Arkham Intelligence estimates the total at over $250 million, while PeckShield estimates it could be as high as $285 million. . Drift has not officially stated the cause, but on‑chain analysts and several security experts point to a possible private key leak that gave the attacker admin‑level rights. . Jiang Xuxian, founder of PeckShield, told Decrypt ...
